Who Will Rule Delhi- The Battle for the Capital

Who Will Rule Delhi- The Battle for the Capital

The much-anticipated Delhi Assembly elections are just around the corner scheduled for February 2025. The political landscape of Delhi will be interesting to observe as much has transpired over the past four years. After 10 years in power, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is facing backlash due to corruption allegations that include the liquor scam, the Swati Maliwal controversy, and investigations by the Enforcement Directorate and CBI on senior AAP leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Sanjay Singh. Additionally, public discontent has emerged around key issues like pollution, stagnation of public transport and infrastructure, and cleanliness of the Yamuna River. Meanwhile the Bhartiya Janta Party will try to increase their seats in the Delhi Assembly and increase their influence in the capital. The congress will try to revive itself in the region as they were wiped out in the previous elections.

Uphill Battle for AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party emerged from the anti-corruption movement in the early 2010s, led by Anna Hazare. AAP contested its first election in 2013 but lost power within 50 days. After re-elections in 2015, they secured an overwhelming majority in both 2015 and 2020, winning more than 60 seats in each election. However, the party has faced scrutiny over the last four years due to various corruption allegations. Beginning with the liquor scam, Senior AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, were accused of favouring certain business entities in exchange for bribes for securing licence to sell alcohol. The Enforcement Directorate claimed that kickbacks exceeding ₹100 crores were paid during the policy formulation and that these funds were later used in the Punjab and Goa assembly elections.

Another setback occurred before the 2024 Lok Sabha election when a Rajya Sabha MP of the party, Swati Maliwal, accused Arvind Kejriwal’s PA of physical assault at Kejriwal’s residence. The party faced heavy criticism as its leaders expressed contradicting views on the matter. AAP has also been criticized for its failure to clean the Yamuna River. These issues highlight vulnerabilities in the party’s leadership. Moreover, Kejriwal’s resignation and the appointment of Atishi Marlena as interim Chief Minister signalled an internal upheaval.

Another challenge for AAP will be their I.N.D.I.A alliance partner- the Congress as there will be no alliance between the parties. A senior AAP leader said that “”Unlike Lok Sabha polls, where the alliance was the need of the hour to prevent the splitting of votes, AAP does not need any support from Congress in state elections”. However, with the voter discontent, this can lead to a split in votes which will hamper their performance.

BJP’s Rising Confidence

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the main opposition in Delhi Assembly, is determined to challenge AAP and the Congress. Their success in the 2024 general elections, where they won all seven seats in Delhi, has boosted their confidence. The BJP has shifted its focus to local issues, such as water shortages, pollution, and the deteriorating transportation system. This strategy marks a departure from solely relying on national leadership charisma, such as that of PM Modi. Emerging local leaders like Adesh Gupta, Kapil Mishra, and Devinder Kumar Sherawat could play crucial roles in the upcoming elections.

As the Assembly elections are near, the BJP is considering former mayors, ex-NDMC members and Delhi unit presidents for candidacy in AAP-held constituencies. According to sources, potential contenders include former MPs like Parvesh Verma, Meenakshi Lekhi, and Ramesh Bidhuri, former NDMC chairperson Satish Upadhyay and ex-mayor Arti Mehra. A party insider also hinted that two former MP’s and a senior NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) member are in contention to fight from the New Delhi seat represented by AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal as well as the Greater Kailash seat which AAP minister Saurabh Bharadwaj represents (Source- Indian Express). This strategy focuses on leveraging experienced local leaders to contest against the current AAP representatives.

End of AAP’s Dominance?

The 2025 assembly polls will test AAP’s ability to maintain dominance after being in power for a decade. In the 2020 assembly polls, the party won 62 out of 70 seats and relied on its core voter base, including lower-income groups and minority communities. However, there is a possibility of losing support from urban middle-class voters and youth as they are frustrated with the “freebie culture” which is taking a toll on their incomes.

Furthermore, the capital is facing a financial crisis for the first time in 30 years, with the 2024-2025 budget predicting a deficit of ₹1,495.48 crores. The lack of sympathy for Kejriwal was evident during the general elections when the AAP-Congress alliance lost all seats in Delhi. These factors could potentially end AAP’s dominance in the assembly.

Expectations from the Elections

While political experts will give an edge to the BJP, voting patterns in Delhi continue to be unpredictable. Although Delhi voters tend to favour the BJP during general elections, they have chosen AAP over both BJP and Congress for local issues. This trend was evident in the 2020 Delhi Assembly election and the 2022 MCD polls, where AAP won 134 out of 250 seats. While AAP may lose its overwhelming majority, it remains a strong contender to retain power in the capital.

Report on West Bengal Assembly Election in Respect to Covid 19

A leader without strategies is a leader without political future

So to tackle this problem our firm is here to consult our political leaders in a best way so he/she may not miss chance to make a political future.

As lockdown continues in our country we have to make strategies according to the situation.

But before planning and making artifices for west Bengal leaders, we will quickly go through the history of West-Bengal political scenario:

The assembly was established in 1862 for Bengal presidency and the presidency became the state of west Bengal in republic of India in 1950.

But on the eve of independence in 1947 Bengal province was partitioned into west Bengal and east Bengal.

The west Bengal legislative assembly was constituted with 90 members representing the constituencies that fell under west Bengal and 2 nominated from Anglo Indian community.

The constitution of India again provided the bicameral legislature for west Bengal.

On 21 march 1969, a resolution was passed by the West-Bengal legislature assembly for the abolition of legislative council.

Subsequently Indian parliament passed the west Bengal legislative council Act 1969 abolishing the legislative council with effect from 1 august 1969.

What is the brief history of West Bengal politics in last few decades?

In West Bengal one of the states in India where strong arm tactics are used till date by political parties for winning elections in several constituencies.

Bidhan Chandra Roy (1948-1962) (INC)

He was a member of the Indian National Congress. During his tenure very few industries were set up. As massive food crisis took place and there was near-famine condition in West Bengal.

Prafulla Chandra Sen (1962-1967) (INC)

He was the first to introduce food-grain rationing in West Bengal. He imposed a heavy levy on rice mills in order to build a food stock. However, in this process, he Make money by sharing your DIY expertise online with Kajabi!

West Bengal since independence till 1967

West Bengal since independence till 1967 was governed by congress party. In between this span it was led by Dr. B.C. Roy, a visionary and pioneer leader who took correct steps to modernise the economy. But food crisis was a feature of that time as was refugees coming from the then East Pakistan in the wake of partition. Overall till then Bengal was one of the leading states of India.

Then came the rising of Marxist parties on the issue of food crisis and refugee issue. After election of 1967, a coalition government was formed with Bangla congress, a breakaway faction of Congress and Marxist block. It started land reform I.e. setting ceilings on land holding and distributing ceiling above land to landless labours. This was also start of naxal movement which became violent and made its effect on economy.

On the industry front, unchecked trade unionism also raised it heads creating a sense of turmoil everywhere. Then in 1972, congress came back on the back of widespread rigged election

causing much anger among general people. The govt led by Siddhartha sankar Roy was pro development but lacked people’s confidence. It also crushed naxal movement brutally through state machinery causing many bright youngsters lose their lives.

In 1977, congress was routed to pave way for left front govt led by jyoti basu.

They carried on land reforms vigorously gaining strong rural base to cement their hold on power for 34 years continuously.

But they failed to check trade unionism causing flight of capital. Also they lacked on other reforms like creating infrastructure, rural roads to take advantage of increased agricultural production resulting from land reforms.

They also decimated every public institution by nominating or imposing their favourite persons through one sided elections or other methods, as its head or governing body. Thus came the fall from grace of Bengal education and health institutions. Buddha Bhattacharya became CM of Bengal in 2001 after Basu retired. He tried to reign in unchecked trade unionism but failed to do so. He had some success in courting industries but the controversy surrounding taking fertile farm land for industry caused erosion in rural support base.

This gave the launching pad for Mamata Banerjee to wrest power in 2011 election. She iscurrently the CM. Right now left front is in disarray after election debacle and failed to consolidate as evident from recent polls. BJP is gathering strength in pockets and may emerge as main opponent to TMC led by Ms. Banerjee.

Why west Bengal is different from rest of the India in all ways: –

As we know firstly there was a communist government which ruled West Bengal for the 40 years and in 2011 TMC government won the election and new government formed of Mamta Banerjee.

Mamta Banerjee (the left of the leftist) , there is it totally state ruling in TMC government , also in lockdown there is no rule followed by the west Bengal government and because of this , Bihar , Jharkhand , Odisha sealed their borders with West Bengal.

Bengal has 42 Lok Sabha constituencies the third highest in India after U.P and Maharashtra.

There is also a great movement called Bargah moment at the time of communist party.

So, this was the history of West Bengal politics and learning from the mistakes of the prior leaders, we decide not to repeat the history again and come up with better strategies and plans for the upcoming leaders.

Present Political scenario of West Bengal

At this hard times of the state, people are facing a lot due to coronavirus pandemic and amphan cyclone, leaders should help the homeless and those who suffered the most.

They should come up with ways to bring the labourers and migrants back to Bengal and and also to plan that how they will generate employment in the state so that people don’t have to migrate to another state for earning.

So, here are some points which will help them for Election Campaign

In a state like west Bengal, we have to focus more on small and local campaign because here most of the people are engaged into agriculture and belongs to rural background.

For urban voters, online campaigning and advertising can be the way of reaching voters and therefore is appealing to low budget local campaign in abstract because using the internet is a cheap way to interact with voters.

Firms can also give their funds to the government so that in rural areas of Bengal those who can’t afford mask and sanitization can get without harming, they can vote safely.

There should be awareness in political booth so the firm can use their manpower for volunteering, because covid-19 has caused many deaths to our country and we can’t become responsible for another one due to their political campaign, so we have to be more focused on proper personal distancing by volunteering people.

Every year election is different but this year election is more likely a test for the politicians of west Bengal.

Amphan ‘The super cyclone’ creating havoc in West Bengal

West Bengal will now face a double challenge, the storm comes when west Bengal is struggling to bring Coronavirus pandemic under control. West Bengal passed more than 3000 confirmed infections with 142 fresh case on Wednesday. Now the emergency workers will have to carry out difficult work with masks, gloves and visors to evacuate people who may already be infected with the virus.

Social distancing though a very good concept may be impossible to enforce in the disaster situation as such. Emergency services is trying to balance between saving lives from the cyclone with saving lives from the Coronavirus. Looming monsoon and flooding season is sure to thrive the virus and even a single outbreak of novel corona virus in the refugee camps is the worst nightmare.

How to win assembly election

Indeed, a political campaign runs on money, but that does not mean it’s made of money. The best part is that it doesn’t have to be cheap, innovative solutions that won’t leave your pockets empty by the end of the day. When you are running a political campaign for assembly elections, the need is to stick to the marketing material that works.

That’s the best part about campaign signs that would allow you to do exactly that at a relatively inexpensive price point. Banners can be an effective way to grab attention and attract new voters. Knowing how to effectively use banners for your campaign will help increase voter influence and the strength of the campaign. Also, the use of promotional items like bamboo stickers, pens, and promo keyrings can help bring the candidate’s name to the forefront and help win the election.

For how to win assembly election – Having effective conversations with the voters is one of the strongest keys. Indian elections are very touché from the rest of the world. We can clearly notice that Indian voters have an intangible mindset. Some contestants will lose the contest even after doing good work and development in their constituency while some may win without fulfilling their promises.

No one can guess, on what basis, voters are going to vote which will impact them like caste, creed, color, cash, religion, region, etc. or development and growth aspects. Some of the factors that might influence voters other than the above-mentioned things are the candidate’s party, family background, celebrity status, and the main leader of the party.
